Alrighty then…………finally we have opened the doors again, albeit with some bumps and wrinkles along the way. We want to update all as to what we are doing on the course as well as to the future plans.
We continue our search for the right person or group of investors, and are confident we will find them, but at this point, we’ve had to take a step back and scale down somewhat.
We remain committed to bringing Rio Rio back to health, and we appreciate your support as we do so.
Before moving to the nuts and bolts of our plans, let me take this moment to let any members and/or green card holders know that memberships will continue to be honored, and the amount of time we are in renovation will be added to the end of your membership(s). —-so come on out and play, help us brainstorm some fundraising ideas, and overall, return to have fun at your golf course!
UNTIL we get some irrigation and pump issues resolved, we have made the decision to put our time and efforts into the Front 9. We will stagger tees so the feel of an 18 hole golf course will be there and provide the challenge you expect. We will begin work on the back 9 toward the end of this year (if necessary funding arrives) and hope to have it ready shortly thereafter. The issue of getting enough water pressure to the entire course is the basis of our decision—–rather than having 18 holes playing at less than a mediocre level, we’ve elected to have 9 holes in much improved shape that is fun to play. We will plant the 18th green so as to have an area to practice putting and short game, and we will open driving range again this weekend.
Calabasas Station will be open for drinks during pro shop hours, and will begin offering light fare lunch items beginning the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, Nov. 25). We are hosting some private parties and events this month, but again, we want to focus time and energy on completion and improvements to Front 9 conditions, thus the choice of delaying opening of restaurant a couple of weeks. As stated, drinks and packaged snacks are available——after all, what’s a golf course without the necessary beverage available after a round?!
We have had marvelous help from many of our members as volunteers and the thanks and gratitude on our parts is boundless. Simply amazing. So many to thank—–a BIG shout out to Dennis Allen for his many hours, efforts, and dollars applied to getting the mowing equipment into working order. Truly something Dr Frankenstein would be proud of———Denny has managed to resurrect machines that have been abused, abandoned, and put out to pasture and turned them into working units.
Also, thanks go to Richard Faubion, Gerry Behn, Jim Kelly, Vern Palmer, Mac Marshall, and SO MANY others that have pitched in to weed, ride the aforementioned mowers, and tame our mesquite forests. We have a few more miles to go, but improvements are visible thanks to their efforts.
More BIG thanks go to our volunteers in the Calabasas Station for our October private events———–guest Chef Peter Picurro from Tubac Jacks prepared a wonderful dinner for an anniversary party, and our own ladies, now referred to as the ‘Rio Trio’ cooked up AWESOME fare for a wedding of 105 happy folks! Cindy Rabbitt, Francine Manspeaker and Deb Vis need their own cooking show——-these girls ROCKED, basically giving a master class on how to run a restaurant and providing delicious fare! And, a shout out to family as well——-little brother Andrew Wolverton and his friend Justin came down from Tucson to bartend and serve the wedding party. Fun was had by all. And it happened to be the very same evening the Cubbies clinched a spot in the World Series! Love this time of year.
We are truly overwhelmed by the support and faith shown by members and friends, truly overwhelmed. Many of you have given time, funds, and support as we all work together to improve Rio—thank you. I must give another shout out to my dear friend Michelle St Rose for her generous contribution toward the grass seed needed for overseed. And, those who are part time residents, but give of their time and thoughts throughout the year——-we thank you! Karen and Monty Turner have been inspirational in their support and ideas, as have Monty and Virginia Crook. Okay——if I don’t stop, I’ll be mentioning each and every person on this email list! And that would be accurate. Thank you all.
For those interested, we will continue the annual membership program, but rather than the green cards and 1 or 3 month snowbird memberships (other than those already purchased) we will be offering packages of rounds——-you may used them throughout the year, for yourself and/or guests. We will continue the 6 month snowbird memberships. Info on all memberships and the play card packages will be available in the pro shop, or I can email to you as well.
Our idea here is a sort of fund raiser——–our goal is to sell 1000 ‘package’ deals at $99.00 per package. This consists of 8 rounds, 9 or 18 holes. Folks may purchase multiple packages, at a 10% discount.
To meet our goal of opening back 9 as soon as possible, this package opportunity will be available for purchase from now until the end of November.
So, winter visitors, feel free to call in and purchase and we’ll hold your punch cards for your arrival! Please help us meet our goal—–tell your friends and neighbors, purchase as gifts, you name it—-all funds raised go directly into course needs and improvements. HELP US HELP RIO!
